By renting a self storage unit, people regain the space that they need without compromising the space that’s already there.

Even though that sounds great, there’s a catch. A lot of people don’t really know what to expect when searching for a self storage unit. They know how to look for self storage units and probably already have a few companies in mind to handle their items. What they don’t know is how to single out the right storage facility that’s well equipped to handle anything that they need to put into storage.

If they aren’t, you shouldn’t be doing business with them at all. The best self storage facilities have security systems that monitor all units on site, in addition to harboring security precautions to prevent theft and other questionable occurrences from happening.

without comments

safeIt is a fact of life that most Americans are on the move.  And, whether that means moving a few hundred feet or a few thousand miles, bringing everything with you can be a real challenge.  In addition, some people just require extra space that they do not have in their house.  For either case, self storage is the answer.

However, some people are unwilling to go down that road.  There are fears of damaging the possessions in transit, or the things becoming damaged when in storage.  Television shows like “Storage Wars” and “Auction Hunters” show us storage containers filled with people’s stuff, often untidy, dirty, and disorganized.  No one wants to end up with their stuff on display.

This shouldn’t keep you from storing your stuff however.  Instead, lets review how to properly store an array of things.  That way, every time you access your self storage, you can do so knowing where everything is, and that it is safe.

Quick packing tips

The best thing to do is come up with a plan.  You only have so much room in a self storage lot, and you will want to organize it so that the heaviest and bulkiest is at the bottom, with lighter things on top.  In addition, creating a channel for you to walk through reduces having to climb over everything.  When packing, be sure to label everything, as you may need to come back to your self storage lot to pick out one specific thing and digging around can be a time consuming headache.

Storing furniture tips

Oftentimes, moving isn’t the number one reason for storing furniture.  Instead, self storage is perfect for when you are remodeling a house or renovating rooms.  If this is the case, then the best thing you can do to reduce damage is to cover the top of the furniture with a cloth to deduce dust from settling on the furniture directly.  Putting sliders on the feet of the furniture will help reduce damage to the legs.  Finally, cushioning any ends that may stick out will reduce abrasions to the sides of the furniture, keeping it in pristine condition.

Storing Christmas decorations

A great use for self storage are for seasonal things, like Christmas decorations.  The best thing you can do is to wrap them up carefully before storage, as you will probably not access them until the holidays come around again.  This way, you save a lot of time having to dust off decorations, and more time getting into the holiday spirit!

Sometimes, having to much stuff can be a headache.  However, you don’t need to get rid of your stuff, or clog up your house.  Rather, self storage Brisbane offers a variety of options for those looking for a temporary storage space.  From antique furniture temporarily moved while reconstruction on a house is taking place, to a storage space for family things to delicate to be brought across the country, self storage can provide what you need with peace of mind.

Organize and Declutter Your Garage

With a new year almost upon us, now is a good time to consider decluttering your home, including the garage.  All to often the garage turns into a dumping ground for items you don’t have room for in your home or for items you don’t want stored in your house.  You probably have boxes of Christmas ornaments, old toys your kids have outgrown and household maintenance and repair supplies in your garage.

Sort Everything Out

To begin the organizing and decluttering process, you need to sort out what is in your garage and decide what to keep, what can be donated, and what is trash.  The best way to do this is to create three piles: one for keeping, one for donating and one for trash.  Only place items in the trash pile if they are beyond repair, otherwise spend some time fixing them and then donating them to a charity.

Once you are done sorting everything into these three piles, go over your keep pile again and get decide if you want to store it in the garage or rent a storage unit to keep those items from cluttering up your garage again.  If you have jet skis or ATVs that you rarely use, why have them cluttering your garage?  Rent a storage unit to keep them out of your way, but still easily accessible.

Add Shelving and Cabinets

If you don’t have storage for the items in your garage that you are keeping, add shelving and storage cabinets to your garage to keep tools, gardening supplies and household maintenance items off the floor and out of the corners.  Keeping your garage organized and tidy will help you find the items you need quickly and it will keep your garage from becoming a dumping ground again.  You may be able to park your car in the garage as well!

Add pegboard to one wall of your garage to hang your tools so you can easily find them.  It also creates a great display for your tools.  Buy one storage cabinet that locks to keep garden, automotive and household chemicals in so that young children can’t readily access them and accidentally poison themselves.

Store Items in Plastic

If you have a bunch of cardboard boxes filled with holiday ornaments, books or other items that you are keeping, transfer those items into plastic storage bins.  Plastic storage bins will protect your belongings in case your garage floods and the tight lids will keep insects and rodents out of your belongings.  They are much easier to stack as well.

Rent a Storage Unit

For seasonal items or belongings that you want to keep, but don’t have room for in your garage, rent a storage space for them.  You will still have access to your items, but they will be kept out of your way when you are not using them.  Whether it is furniture, vehicles or boxes of decorations, your belongings will be safe and secure in a storage unit.

Keeping Your Self-Storage Unit Organized

without comments

units_carA self-storage unit can be a great way to help organize your life, giving you a little extra space and a separate location to store those items that you don’t need on an everyday basis, but still would like to keep around for later. Unfortunately, storage units tend to get disorganized. It’s easy to forget items in a storage unit when you only visit it once every few months. And many people simply toss items in, which means things that they meant to keep safe actually become lost. However, by following these simple tips, you can get your self-storage unit organized, and keep it organized.

Getting your storage unit organized the first time around can take a little bit of time, especially if you’ve got a large unit or a lot of stuff in it. Consider setting aside a day or half day to do it. Invite a friend or one of the kids to come along and help. Pack a lunch. Make a day of it.

The first thing to do when you get to the unit is to remove everything. Storage units normally have some space outside the unit, either in a hallway or outside, so take everything out.

Now, examine what you have. In de-cluttering circles, people often use the ‘4-box’ method, where items are separated into four boxes based on what you’re doing with them: ‘Home’ for items you need to take home with you; ‘Storage’ for items that should stay in the storage lockers; ‘Give away/sell’ for items that you don’t need any more and so can be sold online, given to friends, or donated to charity; and ‘Trash,’ for items of no value. Each item should be looked at individually. Ask yourself the question: Do I really need this item? Will I ever use it again?

Set aside the ‘Home,’ ‘Give away/sell,’ and ‘Trash’ piles to deal with when you’re done with the main event: the ‘Storage’ pile, the items you’re going to keep in your newly organized self-storage unit. It’s now time to organize these items, based on when you’ll need to take them out. Put all the items that you use in a specific season together, such as the winter coats with the ice skates and the Hawaiian shirts with the golf bag. This way, when that season comes, you can easily find everything. Put the long-term storage items together, and further organize them by item type – books with books, kitchen items with kitchen items, etc.

Now, place the items back in the unit, keeping similar items together. Place the long-term storage items in first at the back of the unit, followed by more commonly used items. Anything you can do to keep different groups separate is good. Purchasing sturdy metal shelving will help with this.

As you’re putting items back, take a clipboard and write down every single item that’s in the unit, so you won’t forget. Leave this clipboard in a visible location in the unit. That way, every time you return, you know exactly what’s in the unit. Update the list with each visit to keep the information current.

Self Storage Solutions For Businesses

without comments

business storageSelf storage isn’t only for individuals and families who need more space, it’s also for businesses who need extra space without compromising the space that their property might already provide.

Businesses, especially small and medium sized businesses, typically need more space to store a wide variety of items, including their own inventory of products, supplies and furniture for the property itself, company vehicles and practically anything else involved in the inner workings of an entire business. Without some kind of extra space to store all of their possessions, they end up compromising space on their property that probably is best used in other ways.

Why self storage is important for businesses

Nowadays, self storage can provide businesses more than just storage. Some premium facilities offer services that can include on-site mailboxes, office-related facilities, meeting rooms and even showers that can help provide conveniences to a business that they might not already have.

If they run a full-fledged commercial operation, as an example, they can rent special storage facilities to keep their inventory safe and secure before they’re ready to be shipped to customers following a sales transaction.

The fact of the matter is that most businesses have their own reasons to use self storage. While some smaller businesses will use a self storage facility that provides extra office space, others will want to rent several self storage units to store valuable inventory for their own store.

No matter how a business wants to use their self storage units, many self storage companies provide many options to help business owners effectively use their self storage space. The ease of accomplishing that comprises a big reason why many businesses are considering renting self storage units for their business operations.

Using self storage as a business

As mentioned, businesses pretty much have their own reasons to start renting out self storage units for their own use. In most cases, businesses will take up using self storage for purposes like:

  • The purpose of archiving documents and other important paper work.
  • Freeing up valuable space on their property, particularly with items that aren’t used on a daily basis.
  • Storing extra and/or unused furniture and equipment.
  • Storing extra stock, sales samples or display equipment.

While many self storage companies will store most items, business owners are advised to talk to the representatives of the self storage company that they want to use. Some items might not be permitted for storage inside of a self storage unit, so it’s always a great idea to check first.

The best thing about self storage facilities, in terms of business-related uses, is that they can become a potential tax write off for many businesses. Small, medium-sized and home-based businesses can benefit from this, since they are more likely to have to rent out office space for their business operations. Business owners who feel that they’re eligible for that tax-related benefit are advised to seek advise from legal partners about the best course of action to take.

Any business that needs more storage space can’t go wrong with renting a self storage facility. Self storage takes all of the pressure off of businesses who can’t seem to find the space to keep their valuable items on site.
